The OpenR screen in the All-new Mégane E-TECH Electric is beyond a doubt Renault’s most striking breakthrough in on-board technology in the past several years.

The OpenR Link interface, consisting of two large screens designed to work in a similar way to a smartphone. The first screen is a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster while connected to it is a 12-inch vertical infotainment display.

Renault’s OpenR display is made by Continental and features aluminosilicate-based Gorilla-type glass that is tempered and very resistant to shocks. It is also said to be scratch-proof and should last for a good 15 years. The TFT displays also have an impressive 267 ppi (pixels per inch), slightly more than the 264 ppi found in the Retina display of the latest-generation iPad.

The screen has an anti-reflective coating and also features the same micro-blinds technology as used in the privacy screen features of some computers. The OpenR’s panels also adjust their brightness depending on outdoor light levels.

The screens run on the Android operating system and offer both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity. The use of the Android OS also means that Google Maps is natively installed. Powering the displays is the latest Snapdragon Automotive Cockpit platform from Qualcomm, making the screen seven times smoother than Renault’s outgoing system. LG Electronics was also called upon to ensure the two screens work seamlessly together.

Watch the video recently released by Renault below that details the new screen display in more detail:

According to Renault's Instagram account, the larger display won't be available in the UK at launch, but they won't elaborate on this. That'll be a shame, it may cause many potential buyers to wait

It's probably to do with the lower grant threshold (£32,000) now in the UK, smaller screen means cheaper manufacturing/parts costs.
However, shame if they don't offer it in the higher specs, untill I see it I am not sure, but if the surround is the same size then it will be a no-goer for me, 90% of the time the owner/driver is looing from the outside in so the interior is just as important.

You can see the smaller display if you configure the lowest trim option on the French Renault website:

Strange then that Renault UK make such a thing of the large display on their website. I actually don't mind the look of the smaller display, but wonder if you lose any functionality on the smaller display?

Smaller infotainment system screen - another consequence of the chip shortage or the French don't mind upsetting customers in the UK. Shame really either way.

I've had confirmation from Renault via twitter today that the big screen won't come on any UK model and won't even be an option, very disappointing. The smaller display is still Google powered and will have all the same functionality just on a smaller display.

I'm upset about that too, had such high hopes for that car because of that gorgeous display. I had a chat with a Renault UK customer agent. He basically said that if enough of us complain to customer service, they might possibly consider un-crippling the UK model.

It takes mere seconds to get connected via live chat. If you're willing to talk to them on the phone they have a number there too.
